So different from Gatsby and This Side of Paradise, but exceedingly clever and often funny. Of course, this is where Fitzgerald made his money, so the stories tend to lean more toward entertainment than does his "serious" work. There's even a film based on "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. If kids were forced to read that and "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", perhaps more people would be Fitzgerald fans. Or perhaps not. So as I continue to read, more and more stories echo or foreshadow The Great Gatsby, which I suppose is not much of a surprise. This does not make them bad. The more I read, the more I feel like Scott and I would have been friends, if, you know, I had money and went to Princeton and lived the high life during the Jazz Age. Favorite line from a short story so far (from "The Sensible Thing"): "Well, let it pass, he thought; April is over, April is over. There are all kinds of love in the world, but never the same love twice."
So funny! Summer's over and school is starting again, but Fred and Jess have a major row, and then there is the horrid new English teacher, who want's to eat Jess for lunch, and her Mom is dating someone young enough to be her son....how will Jess ever cope? Watching Jess deal with all the traumas in her life and creating many of her own, is a delight. These books make me laugh so hard. I love British humor.
I was diagnosed with osteopenia when I was in my early 40s. I was interested in preventing further progression (to full blown osteoporosis) so I bought this book. It further educated me in the process of osteoporosis and gave me excellent tips to stave off further bone deterioration. After reading this, I gave it to my sister who also has osteopenia. Worth buying if you have the diagnosis.
So far I will give this a 3 star review. Some of the new twists on zombie stories are interesting, but I'm finding I like more traditional, "pure" zombie stories. I'm new to this "purist" designation for zombie fans that hold to the classic view of slow, non-talking zombies. I like some of the stories, but some were either poorly written or too vulgar to finish. I bought this to study the zombie short fiction market, but these stories make me want to just write a novel where I can track one person surviving and finding places to hide.
This is by far my favorite of Philip K. Dicks books, and the one I actually wish they'd make a book out of. It's been a while since I've read it, but it definitely was the most coherent of his stories (that I've read), and the revisionist history angle was fantastic. It was a world I really got wrapped up in, and a character that I really felt able to connect with.
