I've read this book so many times that I actually feel I can't write an objective review of it. However, I will say this - the first Harry Potter book was a part of my reading library for maybe four or five years before I actually gave it a fair shot. I remember reading the first chapter and then putting it down the very first time I tried to get through Sorcerer's Stone. The Dursleys didn't interest me and I really had no interest in what else was to come after Vernon's weird day at work. But, among the fervor for the release of Goblet of Fire, and after being abandoned by almost all of my college friends the weekend it was released so that they could hide away reading about the tournament, I realized I might be missing out on something phenomenal. As it turns out, I was! My initial feeling of not really wanting to read the rest of the book is the reason for the four-star review. Once I made my way through it, I thought the book was quite brilliant, obviously. As it's book one, the writing is a little un-polished, Harry and his pals are very young, and the plot is maybe a little simple. But, as Harry matures, so do the books. If you've been hesitating about becoming a Potter-phile, stop it and give it a chance. You've nothing to fear, now, since all the books are out! There's no worry of suffering a two or three year wait for the next sequel.
Sardonic, sassy, and a social satire. Fun and fast to read. Written in the style of Wofe's Bonfire, but not as good. Am now listening to Coast's sequel on tape, which is even funnier because the reader, who plays the main character John Sutter, reads with that "Ferson Howell, III" voice. I recommend almost all Demille books.
I loved this book and have never read anything like it! Cedric does exactly what the description says: he physically flashes back to moments, times in his life but with the mind, knowledge, life he has lived as a 58 year-old man. An incredible novelist, Mark Lavorato seamlessly brings together different stories, perspectives, histories, and, with poetry, draws us right in to each character weaving through Cedric’s life. Could be complicated...but it isn’t – it is beautiful and it is beautifully written, set in a unique and exciting format. Must-read!
